About Tiji (Tenchi) Festival:

Tiji Festival also known as Tenchi Festival is a three days ritual which is celebrated in Lo Manthang of Upper Mustang. The festival has been observing since 15th century and is famous among the locals and also has become famous among the domestic and international tourists. Every year a big number of visitors from different countries from Europe, America and Australia visits Lo Manthang to enjoy this festival.

Different cultural programs including Pooja ceremony are the major highlight of this festival. According to the myth, Tiji narrates the story of a deity named Dorje Jono who fights against his demon father to save the kingdom of Mustang from the destruction. The demon father wreaks chaos in Mustang by creating water shortage in the arid land but Dorje defeats him and banishes him from the land. The festival is celebrated to conjure the Dorje expecting to remove all kinds of obstacles.

About Lo Manthang:

Lo Manthang was the walled capital of the Kingdom of Lo from its founding in 1380 by Ame Pal who oversaw construction of the city wall and many of the still-standing structures. After the Shahs of Gorkha forged Nepal out of numerous petty kingdoms in the 18th century, Lo became a dependency but kept its hereditary rulers. This arrangement continued as long as Nepal remained a kingdom, until republican government began in 2008 and Jigme Dorje Palbar Bista (born c. 1933) lost his title.

There are four major temples in Lo Manthang: Jampa Lhakhang or Jampa Gompa, the oldest, built in the early 15th century and also known as the "God house"; Thubchen Gompa, a huge, red assembly hall and gompa built in the late 15th century and located just southwest of Jampa Gompa; Chodey Gompa, now the main city gompa; and the Choprang Gompa, which is popularly known as the "New Gompa".

About Mustang:

Mustang is rich in Buddhist culture, similar to the area of the Tibet. Mustang was once an independent kingdom, although closely tied by language and culture to Tibet. From the 15th century to the 17th century, its strategic location granted Mustang control over the trade between the Himalayas and India. At the end of the 18th century the kingdom was annexed by Nepal.
